Four Levels of a Bookkeeper

Four Levels of a Bookkeeper

Most business owners think 'Bookkeeping' is one skillset, one job. It's not!

At Varntige we believe there are four completely different levels - and knowing the difference will save you money, time, headaches or all three.

Level 1 - Day to day bookkeeping: Reconciliations, GST returns, invoicing, chasing debtors. Keeps you current and everything ticking.

Level 2 - Advanced bookkeeping: Cashflow management, deciding when (and why) to pay a bill. Budgets. This is the shift from recording what happened to managing what happens next.

Level 3 - Software: Researching, choosing, setting up and training your team on the right systems. This requires understanding a business well enough to not run in and make 'quick decisions' because that software generally works well for that industry. Training other people in software is a very specific skill - can you explain it in basic language.

Level 4 - The advice and recommendations: Should you register for GST? What structure should you be in, when to get accounting and legal advice, where is the business heading - have you done market research - all of this needs business experience not just bookkeeping experience.

Where does it go wrong? Most businesses hire a level one bookkeeper and then wonder why they're not getting level four thinking.

Before you hire your next bookkeeper - or judge the one you've got - work out what you actually need.

At Varntige we can help with all four levels.
